CLAY APARTMENT
In one of the most interestingly historical neighbourhoods of Lisbon, where various convents populated the land on the hills of Lapa towards Santos from the early 17th Century, lots of buildings were erased by the moving tectonic plates during the big 1755 earthquake that demolished almost the whole of Lisbon. Over the course of the 18th and 19th Century a new set of buildings rebuilt one of the streets of Lapa neighbourhood. Many of these new buildings were convents or part of the ' religious campus', which were often connected underground by digging tunnels through the clay soil.
Later on and on the last century, a former use of the ground floor space was actually a ceramic shop, which coincidentally makes an interesting relationship between the dug soil and a processed outcome. This proposal seeks to connect both the lowered ground floor, the mid-floor backyard and the first floor.
The clay material, that was excavated to create the foundations and the basement floors of the buildings on this street, is processed alike the ceramic shop and will be the connecting element of the house, throughout both two floors and backyard. A terracotta datum will identify the mid-floor backyard while the light coloured tiles will reflect the sun through the west-facing windows into the proposed bedrooms.
‘Joao has an incredible sense of aesthetics and he has the ability to design spaces that respect the story of the place, while incorporating all the needs of the client. He has displayed great listening skills, and resilience. He is always capable of proposing wonderful alternatives when something doesn’t work. He is rigorous, and has great project management abilities. He is also very well appreciated by the contractors and the workers, which reveals all of his technical and relationship skills. We have had a wonderful experience with Joao, and we highly recommend him for any quality bespoke project.’ T.C. & D.S.
