PALMEIRA APARTMENT
Our clients found a beautiful gem right in the centre of Principe Real, one of the most desired neighbourhoods in Lisbon. The greatest aspect is that it includes a 150m2 garden with pool and several well kept original features from the late 19th Century. Our main goal was to remove non-original and low quality elements, enhancing those that are relevant while bringing the garden feel into the property, by breaking the boundaries and creating designed transitions that provide a modern living quality with elegant and comfortable ambiance.
We were given the opportunity to make use of fantastic local craftsman to produce bespoke designed pieces, using natural materials and in a sustainable manner. Hand carved stone pieces, bespoke cast iron door handles, local lime plaster walls, locally produced handmade pool tiles, etc.
The interior and exterior walls were stripped off to the bone, removing low quality cement patches and past repairs and building up a strong sustainable substract in lime-based plaster in preparation to a lime stucco finish, following the same techniques used in that period and that are the most adequate for this type of buildings. It allows the walls to breath and provides a beautiful mate surface that is fungi-repellent and captures pollution particles, improving the interior air quality.
The integration of the natural feel and look of the exterior garden, several elements have been introduced in the interior spaces to extend the narrative and deliver definition for certain elements that are natural, some of which with organic shapes.
‘We found this beautiful and classical apartment in the center of Lisbon. Although the aura of the site was unique and amazing, it needed a global make over, real thinking about bringing more natural light inside and a lot of obsolete practicalities to work on.
All along the project, our architect João Gameiro was able to solve all the technical issues and brought the best ideas while keeping our major wishes. By combining his subtle sense of aesthetics and his knowledge of news techniques and materials, he gave the most significant upgrade to our house. He brought comfort and practicality to the space, enhancing the elegance, the “chic” and the harmony of the place, while protecting its amazing soul we cherish.’ H.S. & K.W.
