SLAB BENCH

Serendipity is a word we tend to use a lot at our Studio.

The “unusual” and unexpected meeting of sorts between a casual happening, and all that has to happen, one way or the other.

The SLAB Bench was born out of a specific briefing for the VAULT Residential Project, as we needed some unique pieces which would stand on their own, and which would defy expectations. In a way, we created something which we felt could be a cornerstone in any room, its centre piece.

Its design is also a celebration of the union between wood and stone, which tends to be and “feel” heavy on the eye.

These two materials, sturdy and resistant, tend to make any piece feel too strong to resonate with something light in terms of texture, essentially because we use them for their lasting effect.

The SLAB Bench is unique in the way that it feels suspended and extremely soft, which contradicts its rough and raw materiality.

Maybe that’s its particular poetry, that it looks smooth as caramel, but will withstand anyone trying to jump on it.

Design needs to be a bit like that, turning a rough cut into a beauty.
